Training Opportunities

None of us know as much about our computers or software as we would like, so why not take advantage of some of the ways you can get up to speed:

Courses

Term 4 2007

If there is enough interest then Karl would like to run some training in the next holidays. He can run sessions on iWeb, Photoshop and Podcasting. If you want to register your interest then please contact Karl.

  • iWeb:

Apple's web creation tool which makes it easy to create professional looking websites. You don't need to know any code or anything about web site creation. Learn how to work iWeb and learn how to set up a department website or a resource website that can be hosted here at Christ's College.
  • Photoshop:

More and more staff are using this powerful photo manipulation software. This course will cover setting up documents for printing at various sizes, making images out of 2 or more separate images, adding and manipulating text and creating photo-realistic textures and items from scratch.
  • Podcasting:

What is podcasting? Come and learn what podcasting is and where to find interesting podcasts. Learn how easy it is to make your own and distribute them to your students and the wider world.

Spend some time in Google

You can find a tutorial on just about anything you need to know about popular software titles by looking on the Web. The secret is in asking Google for the right things. If you are looking for a particular effect in Photoshop, say a wood texture, you can probably put "wood texture photoshop tutorial" into Google. You should find within the top few links a nice tutorial that gives you exactly what you need. It works the same for most well known applications, and even the Mac itself - try typing "OS X using the dock" into Google. It is worth noting that you can perform a Google search right from the search bar in the top right-hand side of your browser window.

Book in with Karl

Karl is available to train you up on anything you you need to know - as long as you give him enough time to prepare. If you are planning to use a particular piece of software in your class then you yourself should be able to complete the task you are expecting your students to complete. If you can't then you can end up with a "blind leading the blind" scenario. With a couple of training sessions and a little time to practise you should be able to get the results that you need. Sometimes it can be as simple as realising which things are important, and which aspects are worth being picky about when the students are creating their files and saving them.

The easiest way to organise training with Karl is to email him. Let him know what you are planning to do, and what periods you are available. Plan on at least two little 1 hour lessons.
