Email & Web Access

Christ's College has a state-of-the-art internet connection, consisting of a one-gigabit per second optical fibre link to our provider.

Email and web access is available via our internet connection from many places, including the computer rooms, various classrooms, boarding houses, the staff workroom, the music school, staff residences and more. Staff can also use their laptops to access email and the web from any live network connection around College. All of our network connection points support at least 100mbit/sec Fast Ethernet.

Getting your email

Our email service is based on FirstClass. It is recommended that you connect to the email system using the FirstClass Client software, though it is also possible to connect using any web browser.

  • Click to download the latest FirstClass Client: for Mac, for Windows, for Linux.
  • Click to download our current settings file.

Note: If you're using a College computer, it already has FirstClass installed and you do not need to download it.

If you prefer to connect to email using your web browser, use this link. Whenever possible, we recommend using the client software above rather than a browser.

If you have trouble connecting to email, please go to the Help page.

Getting web access

Our connection to the web is protected by authentication, filtering and logging. This really means three simple things:

  • When you start surfing the web you'll be asked for your password
  • Depending on who you are, your web experience will be subject to a certain level of filtering
  • We keep records of absolutely everything you do online

The College computers have two web browsers, Safari and Firefox, installed on them. You can use either browser to access the web from the College computers.

To get web access from the College network, your computer or web browser will need to be configured to use our proxy server.

  • If your browser supports it, you can set your connection preferences to automatically detect proxy settings for this network
  • If your browser or computer accepts an automatic proxy configuration (PAC) file, you can give it the address http://intranet.christscollege.com/proxy.pac
  • If you need to manually configure your proxy settings, our proxy server address is www-proxy.christscollege.com:8000

If you're having difficulty connecting to the web, please contact us for help.
